Basque in Variation / Euskara Bariazioan (BiV) is an online database on Basque morphosyntactic features that show cross-dialectal variation. It stores the data obtained from questionnaires in several Basque varieties regarding a limited set of morphosyntactic features. BiV defines the syntactic features on an absence/presence basis and provides the user with illustrative examples. The values of the features are shown by different colours on the maps. The contributors are mainly but not necessarily language experts with native knowledge of a particular Basque variety, or alternatively, linguists with dialect expertise. The database is open access and thus, can be freely used. It is provided in both English and Basque.
The first edition of BiV was published in December 2016. BiV is a publication of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), and it is sponsored by the Basque Government (EJ/GV), the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MINECO) and the European Commission (Brussels). This is the third edition of the database.
How to use BiV
BiV allows users to search for information about morphosyntactic patterns on the basis of (i) a particular linguistic feature, (ii) relevant keywords or (iii) by choosing a specific local variety. You can access the information by clicking on the 'Features' cell or the ‘Keywords’ cell and selecting a particular morphosyntactic feature, or by clicking on the 'Variety' cell and choosing a local variety. In both cases, you will be redirected to the description and to the answers obtained.
