Generalized pattern. The verbs that have a synthetic form us it to express progressive, habitual, indefinite and generic meaning.

(1) Hori gertatu zenean, etxean nengoen.

'I was home when that happened.'

Variational pattern 1. In some varieties, the past synthetic verbs have almost disappeared, and the verb takes the perfective analytical form.

(2) Hori gertatu zenean, etxean egon nintzen.

'I was home when that happened.'
