Bas&Be (Basque and Beyond)

The research project Bas&Be (Basque and Beyond) brings together syntacticians and researchers from the University of the Basque Country (EHU), University of Deusto, CNRS-IKER UMR 5478, and CUNY.

Bas&Be is coordinated by Beatriz Fernández (EHU) and Ane Berro (University of Deusto) and is financially supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (PID2023-147383NB-I00). The Bas&Be project is also one of the research lines of the research group The Bilingual Mind, coordinated by Professor Itziar Laka (EHU) and supported by the Basque Government (IT1439-22).

Bas&Be aims to explain morphosyntactic variation within a universal theory of human language. To this end, we analyze not only variation across languages but also within language varieties and dialects. Particularly, we focus on describing and analyzing argument structure (alternations), Voice-related phenomena, and their relation to morphology in Basque. Our ultimate goal is to contribute new data and analyses to these areas of study and to develop a more fine-grained understanding of how human language encodes events and their arguments.

PROJECTS

Research projects

Our projects focus on the study of language variation and the expression of events and their participants. We address topics such as case marking and its variation, auxiliary alternation and diverse eventive and aspectual interpretations of verbs and predicates in general. Each project reflects our commitment to advancing linguistic knowledge and fostering a deeper understanding of human language.
